Unit Oriented Architecture

Complete units. Legible formations. Changeable architecture.

A framework for architecting large sociotechnical formations as networks of complete, responsibility-bearing units rather than as invisible accumulations of organizational and technological parts.

Governing questionHow are large sociotechnical formations architected?

The architectural shift

From towers and stovepipes to fleets of complete units.

Traditional enterprise architecture often decomposes the enterprise into business, data, application, and technology domains without recovering the whole that must act, change, and remain accountable. Unit Oriented Architecture begins with a different building block: the sociotechnical unit.

A unit combines a social core—or crew—with the technological craft through which it works. Units preserve enough purpose, capability, boundary, and responsibility to remain complete while contributing to larger formations.

Core commitments

Architecture that remains visible under growth and change.

01

Unit completeness

Each high-level component is a coherent sociotechnical unit, not merely a department, application, or technical module.

02

Realm alignment

Social, physical, and digital boundaries are designed together so that capability remains under legitimate human responsibility.

03

Flat formation logic

Large structures grow through networked relations among units rather than through unlimited recursive containment.

04

Clear ownership and control

Authority over digital resources and operational capability remains connected to the unit expected to answer for their use.

05

Changeability

Units can be added, removed, replaced, reconfigured, or recombined without requiring the whole formation to be rebuilt.

06

Comprehensibility

The architecture gives stakeholders a shared, visualizable account of what the enterprise or formation is.

Unit and formation

Two design questions, kept separate.

Inside the unit

How does this actor remain coherent?

Purpose Driven Design specifies the interlocking constructs that make the unit purposeful, operable, governable, learnable, and durable.

Purpose Driven Design
Among units

How do complete actors compose?

Unit Oriented Architecture specifies unit boundaries, formation structure, relational patterns, coordination, integration, and the conditions for change at scale.

The Fleet matters because ships can contribute to a larger formation without ceasing to be complete operational units.
