Purpose
Why the unit exists and what justifies its boundary.
Framework 04 · Research Orientation
From purpose to executable sociotechnical coherence.
A design framework for the internal architecture of sociotechnical units. It connects purpose to value, interfaces, work, responsibility, governance, culture, memory, and durable outputs.
The nine constructs
The framework treats coherence as a design property produced by interlocking constructs rather than by a slogan, mission statement, or isolated software capability.
Why the unit exists and what justifies its boundary.
What meaningful result the unit creates and for whom.
How the unit exposes capability and interacts with its environment.
How work is organized to fulfill function and produce value.
Who carries roles, authority, capability, and responsibility.
Which rules, permissions, and constraints govern conduct.
Which meanings, norms, and expectations shape participation.
How experience, traceability, and learning remain available.
How durable assets, outputs, and retained artifacts are held.
Coherence
A purposeful unit fails when its value does not express its purpose, its function exposes the wrong capability, its processes cannot fulfill the function, its structure lacks responsibility, or its order and culture pull conduct in opposite directions.
Memory and storage complete the architecture by preserving what the unit must learn from and what it must retain as a durable asset or output. Coherence is therefore both structural and temporal.
Three planes
The unit must be legitimate and operable through people and organized participation—not merely through code.
Purpose and process may depend on physical capability, constraints, safety, space, and retained objects.
Digital implementation should realize the unit’s architecture rather than fragment it into unrelated applications and services.
Relation to UOA
Unit Oriented Architecture addresses the composition and relations of complete units at formation scale. Purpose Driven Design moves inside the unit and specifies how purpose becomes coherent sociotechnical and digital structure.

A unit is coherent when purpose, value, capability, work, responsibility, governance, culture, memory, and storage reinforce rather than contradict one another.
