A conceptual architecture for understanding humanity as a biological, social, and extended species whose adaptive development proceeds through natural selection, organization, and capability-bearing extensions.
The architecture
The framework separates what changes, where sociotechnical activity occurs, and how responsibility-bearing actors are related. The distinctions interact, but none substitutes for another.
The sociotechnical species
Humans remain animals subject to biological processes and natural selection. They are also social animals whose relations, institutions, culture, and collective learning alter what can be done together. Physical and digital extensions enlarge reach, memory, calculation, protection, communication, and construction.
The term sociotechnical species identifies this composite adaptive form. It does not create a new biological taxon, and it does not turn humanity into one integrated actor.
The argument in six steps
Biological organisms act through social organization and capability-bearing extensions.
Natural selection, organization, and extension interact without replacing one another.
Consequential action commonly joins social authorization, digital computation, and physical execution.
Responsibility-bearing actors coexist, participate under regulation, or integrate around binding contributions.
Capability may move outward, but responsibility must remain anchored and correctability preserved.
Bounded actors can pursue demanding missions while keeping the wider future pluralistic, provisional, and correctable.
Central proposition
Extension expands capability; organization governs capability; natural selection continues to test biological viability.
