About the Author

Andre Milchman is an independent researcher and hands-on enterprise and software architect based in Toronto, Canada. His research and practice examine how people, technologies, authority, capability, and responsibility are organized in complex institutions and sociotechnical arrangements.

He is the author of The Purpose Driven Design Framework for Modern Enterprises and Unit Oriented Enterprise Architecture, both published by Apress, and of Ecosystems Thinking, which sets out the responsibility-based architecture from which this book inherits its attention to responsibility-bearing actors, bounded authority, and different forms of sociotechnical order. He has written further books on enterprise architecture, artificial intelligence, sociotechnical evolution, and systems thinking.

In One Garden, Many Gardens, Milchman turns that discipline toward political development. Through the fictional scholar Professor Madoq of Luminara, the book asks whether AI can make political reality more visible, political memory more durable, comparison more scalable, and institutional learning faster — and then asks the harder question, whether the same instruments would quietly narrow the political forms they were meant to help preserve. His broader work seeks to make complex sociotechnical worlds more intelligible without reducing people to components, institutions to abstractions, political disagreement to a score, or human judgment to an optimization problem.
